Dave Logue – 15 January 1960 – 27 November 2003
This event was first held in 2011 in memory of a local multi-sport eventer by the name of Dave Logue who passed away in November 2003 from Melanoma.
Dave was married to Ngaone Tutemahurangi. He helped raise three step-sons, Billy, David and James. Dave was a top cyclist from Taumarunui. Sadly, Dave passed away from melanoma when he was at the top of his game as a recreational and competitive cyclist.
His brother Mike, whom Dave encouraged into cycling, says that the Ohura circuit was Dave’s favourite ride in the district and he always wanted it as an organised event/race. In his memory, the Dave Logue Cycle Classic was born.
Many of his friends rode this circuit with him including famous names such as Ben Fouhy (Olympian), Callum Harland (NZ Champion Mountain runner), Rachel Cashin (Multi Sport Event Champion), and Warren Sanderson (Champion Cyclist, Tour of Southland). Dave encouraged many of his friends and acquaintances into the sport. In particular his youngest brother Andy who went on to complete five Taupo Iron Man races. Another proud moment for the family was when his Dad got into the sport in his late fifties, espousing the adage that it is never to late to start cycling.
Dave’s final words would be, “there is no gain without pain” and “pain and discomfort is only temporary”.
In 2016 the event was re-named the Taumarunui Cycle Classic to facilitate access to more funding to enable us to continue to hold this event. $5 from each entry received is donated back to a local project or organisation within our District. In 2016 this was the Hope Trust whose mission is “To provide help, support and positive experiences for individuals and families in Taumarunui enduring debilitating, chronic, acute, or life threatening Health issues.”
